Fred (William Frawley) asks Lucy (Lucille Ball) to pick out an appropriate gift for his wife Ethel's birthday. Alas, Ethel (Vivian Vance) is disappointed by the selection, leading to a bitter quarrel with Lucy. Hoping to repair the girls' shattered friendship, Fred and Ricky (William Frawley) attempt to trick Lucy and Ethel into sitting in adjoining seats at a Broadway show. The scheme works -- and the ensuing Niagara of tears threatens to drown out the performers on-stage.
