Synopsis by Robert Firsching

This Greek-made documentary from writer-director Kostis Zois takes the interesting position that psychiatry is worthless and that mental patients are merely victims of societal pressures. Studying the asylum on the Greek island of Leros, Zois looks at various individual patients and their backstories, concluding that perhaps social reform would be more important to people like them than extensive psychiatric analysis. An unusual (if not entirely convincing) film, I Azititi was a production of the Greek Film Centre and took the Jury and Public prizes at the 1982 Nyon International Film Festival.
