Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

For centuries, relations between the neighboring Navajo and Hopi tribes were relatively peaceful and mutually beneficial. Then (as is usual in such stories) the white man came, and the conflicts began. In the 19th century, the U.S. Government decided how much of which traditional lands belonged to each tribe and land use and ownership between these territories was forbidden. This only generated yet more conflict and resulted in a massive re-drawing of the disputed tribal allotments in the 1980s and early 1990s. The result of the re-drawing was, as one might have expected, yet more conflict. This Dutch documentary explores the situation from the perspective of the Navajo and shows how various forces have conspired against the retention of their culture.
