Synopsis by Hal Erickson

In honor of Black History Month, theComedy Central cable network offered the five-part interview/documentary series Heroes of Black Comedy. Opening with a half-hour close-up of Chris Rock, the series went on to spotlight Whoopi Goldberg, Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley, and Bernie Mac. The final episode, which expanded to one hour, concentrated on Richard Pryor. Though, surprisingly, the producers were unable to secure the participation of a number of major African-American performers (notably Eddie Murphy), the series did not lack in pointed and affectionate commentary from a steady stream of white celebrities. Heroes of Black Comedy premiered on February 4, 2002.
