Synopsis by Mark Deming
Filmmaker David Calek gives us an eye-opening look into the sexual underworld of the Czech Republic in this documentary. In Nebe, Peklo (aka Heaven, Hell), Calek profiles several members of the Czech BDSM community -- people who engage in bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism, as well as other forms of sexual role playing and expression that fall outside the norms of conventional society. The subjects include a dominatrix whose life with her slave has calmed down a bit since she discovered she's pregnant; a man who dresses in a horse costume and is guided through makeshift equestrian events by his partner; and a woman whose interest in piercings and pain have led her to exciting (and to some disturbing) new adventures. The film also examines the consequences some participants face for being open about their private life style, as well as an annual gathering where Czech sexual adventurers can meet and discuss their interests. Heaven, Hell was produced for the Czech division of the cable television network HBO, and received its North American premiere at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival.
