This anime TV series is based on the same plot as the three-episode Happy Lesson OVA series. The story centers around Chitose, a high-school student who was orphaned at a young age. Years of self-sufficiency and independence are making him jaded and his teachers are getting worried about him, so they construct a plan to help him before it's too late. Five of Chitose's female instructors move in with him as his "five mamas." Now, Chitose has to hide his bizarre home life from the people at school, all the while dealing with the constant coddling of five women with their maternal instinct in overdrive. Despite the difficulty, Chitose is opening up his heart without even realizing it and might just learn a real lesson in being happy. Happy Lesson has the outward appearance of being a typical harem anime, wherein a nerdy male is surrounded by beautiful women and the basis for the humor is sexual tension, but this series is distinctly innocent in its relationships between the male and female characters, lending itself to a more overall optimistic message.
