Synopsis by Mark Deming

A couple is forced to come to terms with their damaged relationship in the midst of a crisis that has gripped an entire city in this independent drama. Wesley (Marko Malic) and Cate (Kasey Buckley) live in New York, where reports of a smallpox outbreak have thrown much of the city into a panic. Wesley and Cate are trying to deal with the news as calmly as possible, putting sheet plastic over their windows and settling in for the duration, but it isn't long before Cate's resentment towards Wesley rises to the surface. Wesley hasn't enjoyed much success in his profession, and the long uphill battle of supporting themselves in the Big Apple has brought Cate to the breaking point; she's sick of the city, sick of Wesley, and sick of life in general, while Wesley himself is hardly any happier with the current state of their relationship. However, as bitter and weary as they've become, they have reason to believe that walking out the door could have fatal consequences. Hand in Hand was screened in competition at the 2007 Cinequest San Jose Film Festival.
