Synopsis by Alice Day
The roles of women in China have changed little despite assurances from the government regarding equal rights. Traditionally, a woman must answer to her father first, then later to a husband, and in her declining years, to a son. Half the Sky also looks at the oppression of women in the labor force, where they are seldom chosen over men for positions, and are the first to be let go in an economic downturn. Education opportunities are few, and family support goes to the males in the families. However, there are some women who have managed to receive training, and have responsible jobs.
