Haiti, which has been a more-or-less independent country since the 18th century, has been invaded by foreign troops many times in the past 200 years, but its worst suffering has been inflicted by its own governments. This documentary takes us to the homeland of voodoo in the time immediately following the death of one of the most notorious of its leaders, Papa-Doc Duvalier. Rather than focusing on public officials and ceremonies, the filmmakers toured the countryside extensively, and in the process shed their official "guides" (actually, censors) by boring them with an excess of countryside living. The film won't bore viewers, however, as Haiti's colorful culture is seen to be very rich, twisted and strange. One of the more interesting features of this film is the window it opens onto the world of voodoo among the poor of this tragic country.
