Documentarian Ruth Walk investigates the living conditions surrounding the Israeli settlements in the Palestinian town of Hebron in her 2003 film Haim Re-Tel Rumeidah (The Settlers). Following a cluster of Orthodox Jewish housewives, Walk highlights the perils the settlers must confront on a daily basis as they stake their claim on the land they firmly believe to be theirs due to divine decree. As the Israeli government conducts archeological excavations in search of factual evidence to support their claims to the land, the settlers in the largely Arabian-populated region conduct their lives with the knowledge that violence could easily wipe out their families at any time. Accompanying the women on their daily business are Israeli soldiers, who act as personal bodyguards for the settlers and further accentuate the virtual state of war that permeates through the region. Haim Re-Tel Rumeidah was a participating film in numerous Jewish-themed film festivals and was often screened in conjunction with Seger, another 2003 documentary focusing on life during the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
