Gustafer Yellowgold is a shiny happy alien with yellow skin and a flame-shaped head who leaves his home on the sun for our "Cooler World". Here, he lives with his pet eel that roots around in his pockets, and a dragon that lives in his fireplace. His other whimsical acquaintances include Applecrumbie, a pterodactyl, and a "Mint Green Bee". Gustafer's story unfolds in this collection of music videos, each of which plays out within a picture frame against a vividly colored background. The words to the songs (included on an accompanying CD) are presented onscreen sing-along style. Though Gustafer is from the sun, he is hard to warm up to. Created by singer-songwriter-illustrator Morgan Taylor, Gusfater Yellowgold is far-out to beat the band, but the mostly mellow melodies are not particularly catchy and some of the lyrics are sure to baffle preschoolers. For example: "So when my days are done/I'll be buried in the sun/Travel through its veins/Where I'll circulate/Through a sunspot I'll escape/Into oblivion". Whaaa? The illustrations and limited animation, though, are more engaging. But I don't expect this to be burning up the DVD (or CD) player.
