This series is based only loosely on the original Mobile Suit Gundam series and takes place in an alternate universe; rather than the Universal Century, this series takes place in the After Colony Era. While the word "Gundam" was originally based on the English words "gun" and "dam," alluding to the destructive force and protective strength of the Gundam robotic fighting suits depicted in the series, Gundam Wing presupposes that Gundams are named for the metal they are forged out of, Gundanium. In this series, the Gundams are used to protect the citizens of the colonies surrounding Earth from the Organization of Zodiac, an aristocratic military group plotting to overthrow both the powers of Earth and the colonies. Gundam Wing was rejected by many previously existing Gundam fans but was well-received by newcomers to the franchise.
