Claude Lescuyer (William Garwood) is forced by his father (J.P. Lockney) to give up his mistress Marie (Vivian Reed). The young man pursues a career in law and eventually becomes the head prosecutor of Paris. Marie, meanwhile, has a baby and marries Flambon (George French) to give the child a name. But Flambon is a brute, and when the girl, Claudine (Gloria Hope), grows up, he tries to force her into marriage with his main creditor, Jean (John Steppling). But Claudine is in love with a young artist, Gaston (Hal Cooley), and she refuses. A violent argument ensues, and Marie gets involved. Claudine is afraid Flambon will kill her mother, so she shoots him. Claude is ready to prosecute the case, but then he discovers that Claudine is his daughter. So instead he gives an impassioned speech, laying the blame for everything on the girl's father, then revealing he is that man. The court is lenient with Claudine, who returns to Gaston, while Claude and Marie reunite. This picture was adapted from the play by Charles Klein, which was adapted from the novel by Francois Coppee.
