Synopsis

Part 3 of four. Visiting lodgings in Glacier National Park, the 1500-square-mile Montana perserve dubbed "the American Alps" by Louis Hill, its spiritual father. Hill ran the Great Northern Railroad, which ran by it. Amtrak does now, and stops at two lodges: the Glacier Park, a "world class hotel at the edge of the wilderness," says historian Ann Emmons; and the Belton Chalet, the park's oldest (it opened in 1910). The biggest, the Many Glacier Lodge, is accessible by road, but the Sperry Lodge isn't. Guests (and supplies) must hike or ride a horse to it. "You have to work to get here," laughs lodge manager Barbara Warrington.
