Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Equally adroit as a painter, war reporter, topographer, and satirist, Spanish renaissance man Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) staked his claim as one of the most remarkably versatile men of the era in which he lived. His styles in all of the said forms demonstrated such radicalism that they weren't fully appreciated until centuries later. This documentary profiles Goya, with an emphasis on the artist's gradual transformation over time, and a look at how such forces as war, illness and inquisition shaped him. Art critic and Goya expert Robert Hughes hosts.
