Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Although the Nazis were able to sustain some illusion of future victory during World War II - both for others and in their own minds - by late 1944 it became readily apparent to everyone, including Hitler and his evil minions, that disaster and defeat were well afoot. Telling circumstances abounded: in the east, the Soviets were preparing a deadly anti-German strike, in the south the Allies were fighting a winning battle in Northern Italy, and in the west Gallic troops had driven the Germans back through France. At this point, it seemed that Hitler's only chance lay in one remaining pivotal offensive, The Battle of the Bulge. The history-themed documentary program Gotterdammerung: Battle for the Fatherland examines the nuances and successive phases of this battle.
