Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
Sammy Hoover was born in the hills of West Virginia in the early 1930s, and he has been around the block a time or two. In this documentary, the transgendered performer, now known as Barbara LeMay, recounts previous adventures as a carnival "hootch" dancer, and being a "homorphrodite" while in between shows at a Hollywood-area strip joint. Reviewers enjoyed the anecdotes of this colorful character, and bewailed the filmmaker's failure to probe more deeply into her background to illuminate the effects of cultural prejudice on her life. This loss is particularly keen as Ms. LeMay died shortly after the film was completed.
