Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Though better known for her theatrical work, Jane Cowl made a number of films in the silent era, of which The Garden of Lies was arguably the least memorable. Told in novelistic fashion, this is the story of the frigid wife (Cowl) of a foreign prince. A handsome American, concerned for the heroine's mental well-being, begins courting her himself. She assumes that he is genuinely in love with her, and when she finds out he is acting out of pity, she goes "slightly" insane. The American is later forced into a duel with the prince, the outcome of which is kept secret until the very end of the picture, by which time the poor heroine has really gone round the bend. The passivity of Jane Cowl's character did little to increase her popularity with movie fans.
