Synopsis by Leslie Birdwell

Artist Daniel Reeves created a video about what animals suffer in general, focusing more specifically on the fate of elephants at the hands of humans. Like a collage, this video combines archived footage, the poetry of Rudyard Kipling, Rainer Maria Rilke, Chief Seattle, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Reeves himself, the text scrolling across the screen for the viewer to read silently. Accompanying the poetry is improvised Sufi music, which creates a free-flowing, dreaming, meandering meditation on the conflict between the slaughter of elephants by some cultures and their veneration in others. Locations shown include India, Kenya, and Thailand.
