While blackface comedy would be considered appalling today, in the 1920s it was a staple in motion pictures. Even Oliver Hardy (who would team up with Stan Laurel to create one of the most famous comedy duos of all time) played in blackface a couple of times, in Honorable Mr. Buggs and in this two-reeler. Wealthy Billy Smith (John T. Murray) buys the Hope Diamond, in spite of its reputation for bringing bad luck. This does not sit will with Meadows, his valet (Hardy), especially when he is left home alone with the diamond while Smith courts his girl (Vivien Oakland, his wife in real life). The couple has an argument, and Smith returns home just in time to catch a woman in white (Ora Carew) stealing the diamond. The woman convinces Smith that she will give back the diamond if he lets her go before the police arrive. He agrees, but Meadows quits and joins the police force. The police commissioner (James Finlayson) finds out that the girl and her partner have been kidnapped, and Smith has to meet the abductor at a graveyard to pay the ransom for the girl and the diamond. Meadows is the officer assigned to the case. Smith captures the kidnapper, while Meadows runs off because he has accidentally shot the police commissioner.
