Donald Richie, known for his definitive book on Japanese cinema, wrote and directed this attempt to translate his feel for the mood and atmosphere of Japan into film. Centered around an affair between an American woman and a younger Japanese man, the scenes flow back and forth in time, recalling important incidents in the relationship. Although they cannot understand each other's speech, they truly care for each other and work to overcome their differences. The Woman (Smila Stefanovitch) and the Man (Kiyoshi Hosoya) give nonchronological scene commentary exclusively in their native languages, with no subtitles.
