In this low budget road movie about the difficulties of love, Edouard and Julia split up during the night but decide to come back together one more time. Edouard is an old-fashioned loner who recites sentimental poems of enlightenment to keep feelings at bay. Julia fights for his love as if she has to win a battle. Traveling on a wild journey through their emotions and through the forbidding outside world, they come to terms with each other, quite against their original plan. Andreas Wunderlich, one of the independent directors of new German cinema, created a very visual film with a rhythm of its own which goes back and forth--at times quite irritatingly--from action to lack of it. The film is tightly knit, stretching over a 24-hour period. The director took chances in casting an actor like Thierry van Werveke, who usually plays the bad guy, in a positive role as the lover. Michelangelo Antonioni is mentioned in the credits, more or less as an homage to a film culture which the director thinks is disappearing. The film may be reminiscent of some of Antonioni's film concepts, but, unlike Antonioni, Wunderlich gives his protagonists a chance, ending his film with a beautiful love scene.
