Synopsis by Mark Deming

If you live in a good-sized city, you've probably seen stickers or graffiti reading "Skateboarding Is Not A Crime!" But just what does the sport represent to skaters, beyond a good time? Filmmakers Tim Irwin and Steve Olpin offer a thoughtful response to that question in the documentary Freedom Of Space, in which fans talk about what skating means to them. The film also examines the cultural and anthropological aspects of skateboarding, pondering its role as a reflection of the urban environment, and how attempts to stop skaters in urban areas often do more to encourage them than to keep them off their skateboards. Freedom Of Space was an official selection at the 2010 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival.
