Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

Shot over a five-year period and covering 15 years in the evolution of a body-modification pioneer, Larry Silverman's unflinching look at American underground artist and cult figure Steve Haworth explores the role a single man played in spawning an entire subculture obsessed with pushing their bodies to the absolute extreme. For anyone who views simple tattoos and body piercing as passé, all it takes to witness the cutting edge of body modification is a trip to Phoenix, AZ. At Haworth's shop in Phoenix, adventurous flesh revolutionaries can have surgical procedures performed that will allow them to screw stainless steel objects into their flesh and remove them when convenient, among other things. Yet while some view this as the next logical step in humankind's quest to expand the flesh while experiencing strange new sensations, others see it as a dangerous and potentially deadly endeavor. Haworth isn't a licensed doctor, and his establishment is frequently targeted by the local authorities. When an 18-year-old girl experiences some frightening complications after a visit to Haworth's shop, it begins to look as if the pioneering body modification specialist may have finally gone too far.
