Multiple award-wining Anna Deveare Smith's one-woman play Fires in the Mirror was written from a series of interviews with survivors of the Crown Heights incident. In 1991, after a Jewish man killed a young black boy in a car crash, a Hasidic student was murdered. A riot soon followed in the Crown Heights area of Brooklyn. Playwright Smith plays the nearly 30 different characters in interwoven monologues representing the varying viewpoints involved in the conflict.
