This fifth episode of the long-running French serial Fantomas was deemed worthy of a separate review in the pages of the trade magazine Variety. Once again, master criminal Fantomas subverts the law by murdering an honest and highly respected magistrate then taking the man's place. Now in a position of unquestioned authority, the hero-villain goes on a murderous rampage, but amazingly his perfidy remains undetected. Eventually, however, a sharp-eyed reporter named Juve figures out that the new magistrate is not operating according to Hoyle. In his usual slippery fashion, Fantomas manages to elude arrest at the end, but the final subtitle promises that he will eventually be caught and punished (fat chance!)
