Synopsis by Kathleen Wildasin
The Face of Russia, Part 1: The Face on the Firewood is part one of a three-volume documentary series that explores the political, theological, and social history of Russia through art. Icon painting, an ancient Russian art form that has influenced Russian culture for a thousand years, is examined in this episode. Narrated by James H. Billington, an expert on the history of Russia, the 60-minute film includes footage of architectural and artistic pieces rarely seen in the West. Highlights include segments on church and monastery restoration in Kiev and at the Kremlin.
