Synopsis by Mark Deming
A woman learns an unexpected lesson about faith, love and parenthood in this comedy-drama from Philippine director Adolfo Borinaga Alix Jr. Lina (Cherry Pie Picache) and Miguel (Bembol Roco) are a middle-aged couple whose life has become a series of disasters; they lost their home in a farming community, Miguel's job at an ice factory went bust when he fell ill, and now they're squatting in a cottage near a massive garbage landfill, where they make a meager living looking for items that can be sold or recycled. Both Lina and Miguel are surprised when she becomes pregnant, and they're shocked when she gives birth not to a baby but a milkfish. Miguel is both horrified and ashamed by this latest turn of fate, but Lina showers love and affection on her curious offspring, and after appearing with the fish on a television chat show, Lina becomes a minor celebrity as she remains confident that these strange things are happening for a reason. Isda (aka Fable Of The Fish) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
