Review by Brian Whitener

In this video take-off from the Surrealist game of exquisite corpse, Ernie Gusella produces one of the most visually arresting videos from the 1970s. The image flickers back and forth between two images of Gusella, one always having a much longer focal length than the other. The shapes of the images are synchronized with each other so, as the video moves between them, the images appear to "replace" one another, as the smoke blown from Gusella's mouth in one image becomes Gusella's body in the next. People looking for examples of film and video crossover, look no further, as this tape has much in common with films such as Ernie Gehr's Serene Velocity, based as it is upon theories of visual perception.
