Recorded live at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Italy, c. May 2002, this EuroArts release features orchestral interpretations by the Berlin Philharmonic of three classical masterworks: Ludwig von Beethoven's Egmont Overture, Op. 44; Antonín Dvorák's Symphony No. 9, Op. 95, subtitled "From the New World"; and Giuseppi Verdi's Overture to 'I Vespri Siciliani'. Universally acclaimed violinist Gil Shaham also makes an appearance on the Palermo stage, performing Johannes Brahms's Violin Concerto, Op. 77.
