Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman wonders if she can forgive the man who ruined her life when she was young in this drama set in Hungary shortly before World War II. Eszter (Eszter Nagy-Kálózy) is a woman in her early fifties who has held on the beauty she possessed in her youth. However, Eszter is still single and lives in the family estate with Nunu (Mari Torocsik), who has been her maid for years. When Eszter was younger, she fell in love with a handsome man named Lajos (Gyorgy Cserhalmi), but her trust in him proved to be a mistake; Lajos turned out to be a confidence man who stole her money and then took off with her sister, leaving her penniless and alone. Swearing off men, Eszter has since lived frugally off an allowance from her family until she inherited the family home. One morning, Eszter receives a telegram with unexpected news -- Lajos is coming back to Hungary to visit his children, and wants to see her. As much as Eszter hates Lajos, she can't forget how cared for him twenty years before, and she finds herself torn between sending him away and giving him another chance. Eszter Hagyateka (aka Eszter's Inheritance) received its North American premiere at the 2008 Montreal World Film Festival.
