Synopsis by Sean Hurley

Noted psychiatrist and author of such influential books as The Politics of Experience, R.D. Laing explores the importance of honesty in human relationships in this documentary, Eros, Love and Lies. Drawn from lectures, seminars, and interviews, Eros, Love and Lies captures Laing as he notes the intense suffering characterized by much of what passes for "normal" family life. Laing reveals how typical families train themselves to subsist on the thinnest gruel of human interaction, masking an unnerving web of distrust and fabrication as a stand-in for honest, loving family relationships. In Eros, Love and Lies, Laing is pained to discover that behavior that is considered "mad" is found not so much in his so-called insane patients, but in families regarded as normal.
