Synopsis by Sean Hurley
Produced by Wall Street Journal Video in cooperation with PBS, the Emerging Powers series takes a close look at the economic changes underway in four emerging countries. Focusing on the growth of private enterprise, each program features success stories from these burgeoning market-driven economies. In Emerging Powers: An Insiders Guide, Vol. 4 -- China, the program looks at the capitalist experiment precariously underway in this last major communist power. With Chinese communists referring to these economic changes as "jumping into the sea," while Chinese youth dream of material success, it is clear that this economic revolution is met with ambivalence in this nation of over one billion people. The program takes a look at some interesting cases of Chinese capitalism, including a rural brick factory, the rise of "talk TV," a struggling rock musician, and a growing cosmetics industry.
