Synopsis by Mark Deming

A devastating nuclear war doesn't do much to change the attitudes of two perpetually cynical teenagers in this darkly comic animated feature from artist Ayar Blasco. Over ten years ago, thermo-nuclear bombs started falling on Argentina and much of the country has been wiped out. What's left of civilization hangs by a thread as people struggle to keep going and survivors wage petty battles over territory and commodities. But Checo (voice of Sofia Gala) and Once (voice of Jorge Sesan) haven't let the collapse of the world around them get in the way of their "everything sucks" philosophy. As Checo and Once wander the blasted landscape of Buenos Aires, they deal with bands of scavengers, voyeuristic computers, obnoxious clowns, heavily armed grandmothers and much more. El Sol (aka The Sun) was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
