Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
Set in southeastern Hungary (towards Romania) this documentary film leads the viewers through the cultural history of an unusual wedding: a woman of German ethnicity is marrying a man of Hungaro-Romanian parentage. While in some areas their different family backgrounds would not matter, that is not the case here. For centuries the Hungarians were ruled by Germanic overlords and German was the official language. The Turks also invaded several times and ruled for awhile, and when the Turks were thrown out by the Austrians, the southeastern segment of Hungary came under Austrian domination. So this wedding between two people in love -- with ceremonies held in two different villages for the ethnically distinct families -- brings tears to the eyes of the participants as they formalize a union that erases the historic antagonism.
