Synopsis by Mark Deming

Father and son are brought together by unexpected circumstances in this family drama. Bazarbai (Bazarbai Matei) is a twelve-year-old boy who lives with his family in a mountainous region between Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Bazarbai's father (Mardan Matei) is a skilled hand with eagles and other game birds, and he wants his son to follow in his footsteps, but Bazarbai is more interested in moving to the city when he's old enough. After Bazarbai's older brother moves to Ulan Bator, the capitol of Mongolia, the boy feels alone and rejected by his family, but his father hopes to cheer him up by bringing him along to the annual Eagle Festival. Father plans to show off one of his prize birds, but when it goes missing after arriving at the festival, Bazarbai is drafted into helping to find it, and the experience leads to an unexpected bonding moment between father and son, as well as an opportunity for Bazarbai to better understand his heritage. The Eagle Hunter's Son was the first full-length feature from writer and director Rene Bo Hansen.
