Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Seventy years old and only five years prior to his death, the legendary Duke Ellington assembled his orchestra -- on November 2, 1969 -- for this concert, entitled Duke Ellington: Tivoli 69 and performed at Tivoli in Copenhagen, Denmark. In this 83-minute set, Ellington reinterprets 15 of his own standards, including "Take the 'A' Train," "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," "Come Sunday," and "Satin Doll" -- as well as a melody of "Kinda Dukish" and "Rockin' in Rhythm." Also featured are supporting solos from such instrumentalists as Harry Carney, Cootie Williams, and Cat Anderson.
