Arousing the suspicion of the bank as she attempts to withdraw 75,000 dollars, a retail cosmetics executive (Peggy Webber) reveals to Sgt. Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan) that a gunman is holding her boss hostage and will kill him unless he receives the required ransom. After the young girl delivers the money, the perpetrator makes off with both the cash and the hostage, though his plans are thwarted when quick-thinking Friday traps him by staging a fake breakdown on the freeway on-ramp.
