While interviewing prospective future law enforcement officers who may be eligible to train at the L.A. Police Academy, Sgt. Friday (Jack Webb) follows his hunch and takes a shine to a shy young man before meeting Harry Lanham. After doing a background check, a suspicious six-month void in Lanham's past makes Friday and Officer Gannon (Harry Morgan) stand up and take note. A visit to Lanham's previous residence in Lake Tahoe finds Friday and Gannon slowly discovering why the aspiring law enforcer neglected to mention this particular period in his career. They discover that Lanham had previously worked as a policeman in Wiley, CA, where a local officer reveals that Lanham was let go due to use of excessive force. In light of this troubling discovery, Lanham's application is rejected.
