Placed on robbery day-watch duty, Sgt. Joe Friday (Jack Webb) and Officer Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan) begin their shift by staking out the home of a suspected truck hijacker. In addition to keeping an eye out for the suspect, Friday and Gannon run into a series of quirky characters, including an old woman who claims that some nearby birds are plotting a bank robbery and a man who seeks a gun permit to scare a neighbor who has supposedly been x-raying him through the floor. As the day wears on, Gannon reveals a hearty fishing tackle box which he has converted into a lunch box which holds nearly enough food to feed the entire police force.
