Although Dora Thorne (Millicent Evans) is being pursued by farmer Holt, a man of her own station, she is secretly engaged to Ronald (William Russell), son of Lord Earle, who employs her father as a lodge keeper. Dora and Ronald wed, and when the marriage is revealed, Ronald is forced to turn his back on his parents and the estate. The couple travel to Italy, where Ronald becomes a moderately successful artist. But after a while, he comes to believe the marriage was a mistake -- Dora's crude country manners cause problems, and she's so wrapped up in her twin daughters, Beatrice and Lillian, that she has no time for him. He becomes reacquainted with an old love, Valentine Charteris, and Dora walks out on him, taking the children with her. The girls grow up and Beatrice gets engaged to a young sailor. But then the old Lord dies and Lady Earle brings Dora and her daughters to her estate. There, Beatrice meets and falls in love with Lord Airlie. The sailor returns and insists on seeing Beatrice once more. The meeting is a disaster -- Beatrice runs away from him and drowns in a lake. Dora and Ronald wind up reconciling over their child's dead body. This picture was based on the novel by Bertha M. Clay.
