Synopsis by Mark Deming

A surgeon's relationships with his son and a patient draws unexpected parallels in this documentary from Taiwanese filmmaker Chung Mong-hong. In the 1990's, Dr. B-Chen Wen was practicing medicine in his native Taiwan and helping to look after his family, including his teenage son Felix. However, after Felix's death, Wen and his family moved to the United States, and in 2003 he began working with Sebastian Tarnawiecki, a boy in his early teens who has been diagnosed with lung cancer. As Wen and his family have had to adjust to a new life after coming to America, Tarnawiecki and his parents have come from Peru to Florida in search of treatment that can prolong the youngster's life. Wen's experiences with his late son bear a frequent resemblance to Ivan Tarnawiecki stories about his ailing son, even though the two boys seems very different in many ways. Yisheng (aka Doctor) received its North American premiere at the 2008 Documentary Fortnight Festival in New York City.
