Synopsis by Jason Buchanan
Adapted from the play by Cyril Gely and directed by Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum), Diplomacy takes place over the course of one tense night in August of 1944. With the destruction of Paris eminent, shrewd Swedish council Raoul Nordling (André Dussollier) arrives at the Hotel Meurice to confront ruthless Nazi Général von Choltitz (Niels Arestrup), who is determined to carry out Hitler's orders burn the City of Lights to the ground. Just when the Swedish council begins to believe he has gained the upper hand, however, the general reveals that failing to carry out his orders will mean the death of his wife and children.
