Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

Accompanied by a children's comic book, this communist Chinese schoolchildren's propaganda film examines an aspect of the brave struggles of Mao Tse Tung's troops against the Japanese. The Army strategy explored in the film is a technique which involved the building of an extensive network of tunnels from which to conduct guerilla warfare. A similar system was used with great effect in Vietnam against the French, South Vietnamese, and Americans. This film enjoyed a brief, faddish popularity in the West in the late 1970s when it was shown on West German television and at the Berlin Film Festival.
