Tsuzuki Asato and Kurosaki Hisoka work for a unique task force, unlike anything on Earth. They are employees of Meifu, the land of the dead, and they are both Shinigami, or Guardians of Death. They work their region of Japan, investigating people who are fated to die but have not, as well as souls that have passed on but refuse to leave the living world. The two partners, only recently assigned to each other, have very different reasons for their decisions to be Shinigami. Tsuzuki's seemingly cavalier attitude actually serves as a front for his truly compassionate nature and Kurosaki's life on Earth was cut short by an unknown illness and now, in the afterlife, he has chosen the path of the Shinigami in order to investigate his own death. The turmoil of watching countless souls cross from one plane to another could move both of these men to question their feelings about death and about each other.
