Perhaps the earliest example of the once so popular "white slavery" melodramas, this eight-minute Danish silent film was directed by Viggo Larsen of The Great Northern Company. A former military officer and theater usher, Larsen became The Great Northern's first director/star. Here he rescues Gerda Jensen from a fate worse than death in the hands of an evil slave trader (a bordello proprietor). Den Hvide Slavinde ("The White Slave Girl") was one of the very first narrative films produced in Denmark. A former ballet dancer, Gerda Jensen appeared in films during 1907. Den Hvide Slavinde has been preserved by the Danish Film Institute.
