Synopsis by Gönül Dönmez-Colin

This is a road movie about two Malaysian buddies, Mafiz and Yadi, who make plans to go to Manchester, England. Yadi is a fan of the Manchester United soccer team, while Mafiz wants to search for his father, who once left as a seaman for Liverpool. The most important reason to get away is, however, their boring lives in the rural village of Jemapoh where there is nothing to do unless one wants to count cows. The two friends set off in a borrowed car without the slightest idea where Manchester is. On the way, they meet Lini and Mila, who have their own reasons for getting away. At first, the new travelling companions put the two friends at odds with each other, but soon the adventures they encounter create a bond among the four. At the end of the film, it is not evident whether they will ever reach Manchester, but they seem to have found what they have been looking for. The film mixes humor with melancholy in reflecting the impossible dreams of youth. Dari Jemapoh ke Manchestée which was made with assistance from the Hubert Bals Fund of International Film Festival Rotterdam, was screened during the 28th edition of that festival in 1999.
