Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

The director of this Yugoslavian film, Zivojin Pavlovic, is noted for his naturalistic style and for themes exploring the failure of grand schemes to live up to their promises. As much of Pavlovic's filmed disillusionment was political in nature, he played a daring, even a dangerous game with authorities. One such film was Zaseda, or The Ambush, which highlights the failure of Stalinism. In Crveno Klasje, or Red Wheat, an idealistic young Yugoslav ex-partisan works to implement the Communist Party's policy of organizing farms and farmers into communes. In a triumph of human nature over dogma, when he gets to know the farmers and the reality of their lives, his determination to strictly enforce party doctrine evaporates.
