This film is one of a series of documentaries about the American campaign in Europe during World War II. The stories are based on the memoirs of General Dwight Eisenhower. The series, narrated by Westbrook Van Voorhis and Hugh James, looks at major miliatry campaigns and strategies, using archival film footage from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Coast Guard, as well as the British War Office, the National Film Board of Canada, and captured Nazi materials. This episode chronicles the attack on Italy after Northern Africa had been secured. The offensive was launched from Messina, in Sicily, and resulted in the surrender of Mussolini's Fascist forces.
