Synopsis by Mark Deming

The true story of a man who helped usher Peru into the modern age is brought to the screen in this biographical drama. Near the dawn of the 20th Century, Enrique Aet (Diego Bertie) was an ambitious young engineer who was helping to build roads and bridges for the Peruvian government while engaged to marry Doris (Vanesa Saba), the daughter of a successful newspaper published. Aet was sent to the wilds of the Amazon for a building project, where he had a brief fling with a beautiful local woman (Nidia Bermejo) which left her with a child. After he was injured Aet returned to Lima, where he first encountered Jose (Carlos Carlin), who became a bitter rival among his fellow engineers. A visit to Europe left Aet strongly impressed with the quality and depth of their communications system, and upon returning he made it his goal to bring the same communications network to Peru. As Aet struggles to make his dream of a modern Peru a reality and marry Doris, his brother Oswaldo (Gonzalo Molina) attempts to unionize the nation's laborers in a futile struggle against exploitation by Peru's tycoons. Una Sombra al frente (aka Crossing A Shadow) was written and directed by Augusto Tamayo, who based his screenplay on a book written by his father.
